For most people, the base iPad (A16) wins the iPad vs iPad Air question. It covers streaming, browsing, notes and schoolwork for $449. The iPad Air (M4) costs $749, and the extra $300 makes sense only if you want Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro, a 13-inch screen or a much faster USB-C port.
Both of those are current prices, after Apple’s June 25, 2026 increase. If a comparison you’re reading still quotes $349 and $599, it was written before the hike, and so was its value math.
Key takeaways
- The iPad (A16) starts at $449 and the 11-inch iPad Air (M4) at $749 since Apple’s June 25, 2026 price increase. The gap grew from $250 to $300.
- The iPad Air (M4) runs Apple Intelligence and the iPad (A16) does not. The Air also has 12GB of memory and an 8-core M4 chip.
- Apple Pencil Pro works only on the Air. Apple Pencil (USB-C) works on both, and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) works on neither.
- The 11-inch screens have the same resolution and brightness. The Air adds P3 color, lamination and an antireflective coating, and comes in a 13-inch size.
- Both USB-C ports carry DisplayPort video, but only the Air’s is rated for USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s and a 6K external display. The base iPad’s port runs at USB 2.0 speed (up to 480Mb/s).
iPad vs iPad Air specs side by side
The two tablets have more in common on paper than the price gap suggests. The 11-inch screens share a resolution and brightness rating. The real differences are the chip, the memory, the port and accessory support.

How much more does the iPad Air cost now?
On June 25, 2026, Apple raised the iPad Air from $599 to $749 and the base iPad from $349 to $449. The 13-inch iPad Air rose from $799 to $949 in the same increase.
That widened the gap between the two from $250 to $300. In a statement reported by Bloomberg, Reuters and CNN, Apple blamed memory and storage: demand from AI data centers drove component prices up faster than the company had ever seen. The same memory crunch matters if you’re also pricing PC parts. Our DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM guide covers that side.
Lots of comparisons still show launch pricing: $349 for the iPad (A16) and $599 or $799 for the iPad Air (M4). If a page doesn’t mention the June 2026 increase, assume its prices are out of date.
A16 vs M4: does the chip matter in daily use?
For video, web browsing, email and note apps, the A16 is enough. The difference that matters most day to day is software: Macworld’s review confirms that the A16 can’t run Apple Intelligence, though the reviewer found they didn’t miss it much in everyday use.
The iPad Air (M4) supports Apple Intelligence and has twice the memory, with 12GB of unified memory and 120GB/s of bandwidth. Its M4 has an 8-core CPU (3 performance cores, 5 efficiency cores), a 9-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine.
Apple rates the M4 at up to 30 percent faster than the M3 and up to 2.3 times faster than the M1. Apple hasn’t published a direct A16 vs M4 figure. In practice, the extra power and memory matter most for heavy creative apps, big multitasking sessions, demanding games and on-device AI features.
- The A16 is enough for: streaming, browsing, reading, video calls, schoolwork, handwritten notes and casual games.
- The M4 is worth it for: Apple Intelligence, photo and video editing, pro drawing apps with lots of layers, and keeping the tablet for many years.
Is the iPad Air’s display better, or just bigger?
It’s somewhat better, and it comes in a bigger size, but it isn’t a different kind of screen. The 11-inch models have the same 2360 x 1640 resolution at 264 ppi and the same 500 nits of brightness. The base iPad’s panel runs at 60Hz.
Apple’s spec sheet describes the Air’s screen as an LED-backlit IPS LCD and doesn’t list ProMotion or OLED. If you were expecting a smoother, high-refresh panel, the Air doesn’t have one. The upgrades are P3 wide color, full lamination (the glass sits directly on the display, so there’s less gap under the Pencil tip) and an antireflective coating.
The bigger difference is size. The 13-inch iPad Air has a 2732 x 2048 screen with 600 nits of brightness, and nothing in the base iPad line comes close. It costs $949 after the June increase and weighs 616g (1.36 lb), compared with 464g for the 11-inch Air.
Which Apple Pencil and keyboard work with each iPad?
This is where buyers most often get caught out. Neither current model works with every Apple Pencil, and the keyboards don’t swap between them. Here is the compatibility according to Apple’s Pencil compatibility guide and Apple’s keyboard lineup.
| Accessory | iPad (A16) | iPad Air (M4), 11-inch and 13-inch |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pencil (1st generation) | Yes, with USB-C adapter | No |
| Apple Pencil (2nd generation) | No | No |
| Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Pencil Pro | No | Yes |
| Magic Keyboard Folio | Yes | No |
| Magic Keyboard for iPad Air | No | Yes |
The base iPad doesn’t support Apple Pencil Pro. Apple Pencil Pro works only on the iPad mini (A17 Pro), the iPad Air (M2, M3 and M4) and the iPad Pro (M4 and M5). Apple also lists Apple Pencil hover support for the Air. If you already own an Apple Pencil (2nd generation), it won’t work with either current model.
What do the keyboards cost?
Keyboard prices didn’t change in the June 2026 hike. As of October 2026, Apple’s keyboard page still lists the Magic Keyboard Folio at $249 and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air from $269 for the 11-inch, with the 13-inch at $319, the same as its launch price.
- iPad (A16) with Magic Keyboard Folio: $449 + $249 = $698, before a Pencil
- 11-inch iPad Air (M4) with Magic Keyboard: $749 + $269 = $1,018, before a Pencil
- 13-inch iPad Air (M4) with Magic Keyboard: $949 + $319 = $1,268, before a Pencil

Can either iPad drive an external monitor or fast drives?
The Air’s USB-C port supports charging, DisplayPort and USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s. It can drive one external display at up to 6K resolution at 60Hz. If you move large video files to an SSD, or want to use the tablet at a desk with a monitor, that’s a real advantage.
The base iPad’s port supports charging, DisplayPort and USB 2.0 at up to 480Mb/s, so it can output video over USB-C too. But Apple doesn’t state an external-display resolution or refresh rate for it the way it does for the Air, and data transfers are far slower. It’s fine for charging and small transfers. Copying large files will be slow.
Wireless follows the same pattern. The Air uses Apple’s N1 and C1X chips and supports Wi-Fi 7, while the base iPad has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. The base iPad has a 28.93 watt-hour battery rated for up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi or video.

Is the iPad Air worth it over the regular iPad?
Here’s a simple rule. If you need Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro, a 13-inch screen, or fast transfers and external-display output over USB 3, get the Air. Otherwise, the base iPad covers most tablet use for $300 less.
Skip the Air if your tablet is mostly a couch screen for video, reading and browsing. Skip the base iPad if you plan to draw seriously, edit photos or video, or keep the tablet long enough for Apple Intelligence features to matter to you.

Frequently asked questions
Is the base iPad good enough for note-taking and light drawing?
Yes. It works with Apple Pencil (USB-C), and with Apple Pencil (1st generation) if you use a USB-C adapter. That covers handwritten notes and casual sketching. Serious artists will get more from the Air’s Apple Pencil Pro support and laminated screen.
Should I buy the 11-inch or 13-inch iPad Air?
Get the 11-inch if you’ll carry it around or hold it a lot, since it weighs 464g against 616g. Pick the 13-inch if you multitask in split screen or draw on it daily and can justify its reported $949 price plus a $319 keyboard.
Is an iPad Air (M3) still a good alternative?
It supports the same Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard for iPad Air as the M4 model, according to Apple. Apple rates the M4 at up to 30 percent faster. An M3 model is worth it only if you can find it for meaningfully less, so check Apple’s refurbished store and compare against the current $749.
Does the education discount still apply to the iPad Air?
At launch, Apple’s education pricing started the 11-inch Air at $549 and the 13-inch at $749. Those figures predate the June 2026 increase, so check Apple’s education store for current pricing.
